چکیده

We ap ply Constructal the ory to the study of the flow struc ture of the hu man re spi ra tory tree. We show that the flow ar chi tec ture that would per form ox y gen a tion of the blood and re moval of car bon di ox ide best, i. e. with low est re sis tance, would be com posed of a chan nel sys tem with 23 bi fur ca tion with a dif fu sive zone (alveolus) at the end. As this tree matches the hu man re spi ra tory tree we con clude that na ture has op ti mized it in time. Two constructal re la tion ships also emerge: (1) the length l, de fined by the ra tio of the square of the air way di am e ter to its length, is con stant for all in di vid u als of the same spe cies, and (2) the length l is re lated to the vol ume of the space al lo cated to the re spi ra tory pro cess, to the length of the re spi ra tory tree and to the area of the al ve oli, and de ter mines univocally the branch ing level of the re spi ra tory tree.

The constructal law of design and evolution in nature.

Constructal theory is the view that (i) the generation of images of design (pattern, rhythm) in nature is a phenomenon of physics and (ii) this phenomenon is covered by a principle (the constructal law): 'for a finite-size flow system to persist in time (to live) it must evolve such that it provides greater and greater access to the currents that flow through it'. This law is about the necessit...

The constructal law of organization in nature: tree-shaped flows and body size.

The constructal law is the statement that for a flow system to persist in time it must evolve in such a way that it provides easier access to its currents. This is the law of configuration generation, or the law of design. The theoretical developments reviewed in this article show that this law accounts for (i) architectures that maximize flow access (e.g. trees), (ii) features that impede flow...

The principle that generates dissimilar patterns inside aggregates of organisms

Pattern formation and self-organization are phenomena that occur across the board, in animate and inanimate systems. In this paper, we rely on the constructal law to explain the generation of patterns (shapes, structures) in aggregates of organisms – pedestrian crowds and stony corals. In pedestrian crowds a variety of patterns are often observed, from ‘chaotic’ appearances to spontaneous organ...

Note on constructal theory of organization in nature

In analyses of engineering systems, fundamental quest remains the distribution of certain entities (matter, energy) into the space. Thus certain definite forms are generated to serve a specific purpose. Bejan s constructal theory specifically deals with such optimal geometrical constructions. In this present article, equipartition theory is revisited from macroscopic standpoint. It is noted tha...

Bejan s constructal theory of equal potential distribution

Bejan s constructal theory is explored for a paradigm problem in electrical theory, analogue of a wide range of transport problems involving flow subject to a Ohm s Law model. The equi-potential optimisation is derived and generalised to further functional behaviour of resistances. The original case illustrates the power of Bejan s asymptoticintersection method. 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All r...
